An allergy is an exaggerated reaction of the immune system to bodily contact with certain foreign substances. The reason why the reaction is considered exaggerated is because the foreign substances that acted as a trigger are usually harmless in nature and causes absolutely no response in cases of non – allergic people. Allergy producing substances are known as “allergens”. Common allergens are certain foods, pollens, molds, dust mites and danders.

It is important to understand that allergies are caused by certain foreign substances only to some people. It is difficult to know what substances will create an allergic reaction in certain people. The very uncertain nature of allergic reactions is what makes the thing so difficult to treat. For some people, dusting a room may cause an allergic reaction while in some people the touch of a particular material on the skin may have the same effect.

Allergies can even be fatal. Though most allergic reactions result in swelling of the face, tongue, mouth and nose, shortness of breath, itching of the skin, etc., if emergency medical help is not given, it may even lead to death. This is the reason why preventing allergy is extremely important. Prevention is the best allergic treatment anyone can think of. It is a good idea to let children come in physical contact with natural elements such as animals, plants, earth, dirt, pollen, etc. so that their bodies recognize common natural things as harmless and don’t over -react against them later on in life. Research has even shown that early contact of children with pets such as dogs and cats is a good way to stop allergies from developing in them. Once an allergy has developed it is essential that the person makes his best efforts so as not to trigger it off.

Avoiding foods that one reacts to; keeping rooms, furniture, beds and clothes free of dust; avoiding coming in physical contact with the animals one reacts to; avoiding foods and beverages which contain unnatural additives; avoiding the use of cosmetics and soaps which contain unnatural additives; avoiding molds and avoiding exposure to chlorine are good for preventing allergies.

Allergies are not curable but there are certain over-the-counter medicines available which will help in easing the symptoms of allergies. Over - the - counter allergic medicines that are available are called antihistamines, combination medicines, decongestants, corticosteroids, etc. Other than over - the - counter allergic medicines, allergy shots are another way of allergic treatment. When allergy shots are taken regularly, they increase the immunity of a person against allergens.

On the other hand, antihistamines, which are available over-the-counter, have been used for many years to relieve the symptoms of allergic reactions. They are available in liquid, pills, eye drops and nasal sprays. Allergic eye drops go a long way in relieving itchy red eyes while allergic nasal sprays are good for treating seasonal allergies. Benadryl, Chlor-Trimeton, Zyrtec, Claritin, Dimetane and Tavist are common histamines. If you have an allergy, do talk to your doctor about it.
